Our Lady of Guadalupe Statue with Wooden Base

8” High - Resin

In 1531 in Mexico City, an indigenous man, Juan Diego, would make visits to a Franciscan mission for religious education.  One day, as he passed Tepeyac Hill, the Virgin Mary appeared to him requesting that the bishop build a chapel there in her name.  When Juan told the bishop, he asked for proof.  Mary appeared again and told Juan to gather flowers that she arranged in his tilma (cloak).  When he returned to the bishop and opened his cloak, a miraculous image of Mary was imprinted on the tilma.  Mary herself used the name Guadalupe and it was after this apparition that the native people began to accept Christianity. The tilma, which has miraculously survived, is still displayed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
