Praying the Psalms in the Light of the Lord's Prayer
To the question, "How shall we pray?", we have the answer in the Lords' Prayer. Prior to Jesus revealing the Our Father to his disciplesthe Holy Spirit had already taught the People of God the 150 Psalms of the Hebrew Scriptures.  It would be most helpful to our ability to pray if we could somehow combine these two forms of Biblical prayer.  This task has been accomplished in the prayer book, A Pater Noster Psalter:  Praying the Psalms in the Light of the Lord's Prayer by Reverend Thomas K. Murphy, O.F.M. and Pamela E. Nagle, O.F.S.  In recent years Biblical scholars have arranged all the Psalms into several categories.  In this book the Psalms have been specifically chosen by category to match neatly with the phrases of the Lord's Prayer and the seven days of the week.   Our Father Who Art In Heaven, 12 Confidence Psalms, available for prayer on Sunday, Hallowed Be Thy Name, 35 Hymns of Praise and Psalms of Thanksgiving, available for prayer on Monday, Thy Kingdom Come, 23 Royal Psalms, available for prayer on Tuesday, Thy Will Be Done, 22 Wisdom Psalms, available for prayer on Wednesday, Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread, 10 Supplication Psalms, available for prayer on Thursday, Forgive Us Our Trespasses, 10 Penitential Psalms, available for prayer on Friday, . . . Deliver Us From Evil, 38 Deliverance Psalms, available for prayer on Saturday.  In the current secular environment, Christians need to maintain their prayer life as one of the "first things" in their faith.  Praying the Psalms in the Light of the Lord's Prayer may be an invaluable help in accomplishing this goal.
