This stunning San Damiano cross is handcrafted by an artisan in Assisi.  It features a thick cut wood border and is a beautiful replica of the original San Damiano Cross which hangs in the Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi, Italy. The cross is one inch thick and comes with a mountable backing for a hook or nail. 

 In 1205, Francis felt called to pray before the crucifix in the abandoned San Damiano chapel near Assisi.  When the image of Christ on the cross miraculously spoke the words, “Francis, go and repair My house”, Francis accepted this as his mission.  He first worked to repair the church buildings, but his great repair of the Church was his founding of the Franciscan order.  The icon cross remains an important symbol to Franciscans.
