The Story of Saint Francis
Few saints have captured hearts across centuries quite like St. Francis of Assisi. Known for his joyful spirit, deep love of creation, and radical simplicity, Francis showed the world a new way of living the Gospel—one rooted in humility, peace, and trust in God.
A Young Man Searching for More
Francis was born in 1181 or 1182 in the hill town of Assisi, Italy. His father was a prosperous cloth merchant, and Francis grew up surrounded by comfort and opportunity. As a young man he loved music, friendship, and adventure, and he dreamed of becoming a knight.
But after experiencing the hardships of war and a serious illness, something began to change within him. Francis felt a growing desire for a deeper purpose. While praying in the small, crumbling chapel of San Damiano, he heard Christ speak from the crucifix:
"Francis, go and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin."
At first, Francis thought he was being asked to rebuild the physical church. He sold cloth from his father’s shop and used the money to repair the chapel. Over time, however, he realized that God was calling him to something much greater—to help renew the spiritual life of the Church.
A Life of Radical Simplicity
Francis began living a life of poverty, prayer, and service. He gave up wealth and status, choosing instead to trust completely in God. He cared for the poor, embraced lepers who were often feared and rejected, and preached about God’s love wherever he went.
What made Francis so compelling was his joy. He believed that everything in creation reflected God’s goodness. He spoke of the sun as “Brother Sun,” the moon as “Sister Moon,” and even welcomed animals and nature as part of God’s family.
His message was simple yet powerful:
Live the Gospel with sincerity, humility, and love.
A Movement Begins
Francis’ way of life quickly attracted others who wanted to follow the same path. Young men began joining him, seeking a life centered on prayer, fraternity, and service to others.
In 1209, Francis traveled to Rome and received approval from the Pope to begin a new religious community. This brotherhood became known as the Order of Friars Minor, often simply called the Franciscans.
The word minor reflected Francis’ desire that the brothers see themselves as “lesser ones”—humble servants who walk alongside the poor and proclaim peace.
A Legacy That Lives On
More than 800 years later, the spirit of St. Francis continues to inspire people around the world. His message of peace, care for creation, and compassion for the poor remains as relevant today as it was in medieval Assisi.
Today, the Friars Minor carry forward Francis’ mission. These friars live in community, dedicate themselves to prayer, and serve people in parishes, ministries, and outreach programs across the world.
Through their lives, the simple and powerful vision of St. Francis continues—reminding us that holiness often begins with small acts of love, humility, and trust in God.
